A Clean-based Method for Deconvolving Interstellar Pulse Broadening from Radio Pulses
نویسنده
چکیده
Multipath propagation in the interstellar medium distorts radio pulses, an effect predominant for distant pulsars observed at low frequencies. Typically, broadened pulses are analyzed to determine the amount of propagation-induced pulse broadening, but with little interest in determining the undistorted pulse shapes. In this paper we develop and apply a method that recovers both the intrinsic pulse shape and the pulse broadening function that describes the scattering of an impulse. The method resembles the CLEAN algorithm used in synthesis imaging applications, although we search for the best pulse broadening function, and perform a true deconvolution to recover intrinsic pulse structre. As figures of merit to optimize the deconvolution, we use the positivity and symmetry of the deconvolved result along with the mean square residual and the number of points below a given threshold. Our method makes no prior assumptions about the intrinsic pulse shape and can be used for a range of scattering functions for the interstellar medium. It can therefore be applied to a wider variety of measured pulse shapes and degrees of scattering than the previous approaches. We apply the technique to both simulated data and data from Arecibo observations. Subject headings: Pulsars, Interstellar Scattering, Data Analysis, CLEAN Technique

Multifrequency Observations of Radio Pulse Broadening and Constraints on Interstellar Electron Density Microstructure
We have made observations of 98 low-Galactic-latitude pulsars to measure pulse broadening caused by multipath propagation through the interstellar medium. Data were collected with the 305-m Arecibo telescope at four radio frequencies between 430 and 2380MHz. We used a CLEAN-based algorithm to deconvolve interstellar pulse broadening from the measured pulse shapes. We employed two distinct pulse...
متن کاملRadio-wave propagation in the non-Gaussian interstellar medium
Radio waves propagating from distant pulsars in the interstellar medium (ISM), are refracted by electron density inhomogeneities, so that the intensity of observed pulses fluctuates with time. The observed pulse shapes are used to diagnose electron-density distribution in the ISM. The theory relating the observed pulse time-shapes to the electron-density correlation function has developed for 3...

This paper considers scattering screens that have arbitrary spatial variations of scattering strength transverse to the line of sight, including screens that are spatially well conÐned, such as disks and Ðlaments. We calculate the scattered image of a point source and the observed pulse shape of a scattered impulse. The consequences of screen conÐnement include (1) source image shapes that are ...

Clean 7.5 fs pulses at 400 nm with less than 3% energy in tiny satellite pulses were obtained by spectral broadening in a hollow fiber and dispersive compensating using a prism pair together with a deformable mirror system. As an example, this stable and clean pulse was used to study the ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy of photoactive yellow protein. Moreover, the self-diffraction signal shows...
متن کاملSearches for Fast Radio Transients
We discuss optimal detection of fast radio transients from astrophysical objects while taking into account the effects of propagation through intervening ionized media, including dispersion, scattering and scintillation. Our analysis applies to the giant-pulse phenomenon exhibited by some pulsars, for which we show examples, and to radio pulses from other astrophysical sources, such as prompt r...
